SHAI VS BOOK

It has been over a year and a half since SGA (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) unveiled his signature shoe, the Shai 001 (February 2025), which makes it an unusually long lifespan compared to signature models in the overall landscape. However, its longer presence has allowed the signature line to properly settle in, with colourways selling out upon release and a lifestyle-focused design that travels beyond the basketball space. Another signature shoe that has had a similar approach is the Book line for Devin Booker. Book 1 was first unveiled in September 2023, with Book 2 releasing in December 2025. Whilst the release date of Book 3 is unclear, at the time of writing, the average lifespan of a Book model is around a year and a half. The Book line’s approach, which combines designing a performance shoe that works with lifestyle, is similar to that of the Shai 001. However, the two shoes have a stark contrast in market success, with the Shai 001 being arguably the most successful first signature model in recent history, while the Books are often overlooked by most people. So we looked into the core elements that created this imbalance between the signature lines and how the Book line might be able to recreate the success of the Shai 001.

Performance on Court

At its core, both are signature shoes represented by the athlete that wears them, and if the player isn’t able to show up on court, it’s no use. Since the release of the Shai 001, SGA has experienced immense success as a player individually and at a team level. He has won back-to-back MVPs wearing the Shai 001s. And his team, the OKC Thunder, won a championship in the shoe’s debut year alongside a WCF appearance the following year. Also in the regular season, the OKC Thunder were first overall in both seasons. These individual and team accolades combined have created a halo effect on the shoes SGA is wearing, thus generating more demand for them.

On the other hand, Devin Booker hasn’t been able to find the same success both as a player and at a franchise level. His individual accolades since the 23-24 season have been two all-star appearances and a third-team All-NBA. The Phoenix Suns have also failed to replicate their success since their Finals run in 2021, as they failed to advance to the second round in both the 23-24 and 25-26 seasons and made no appearance in 24-25 with an 11th finish. As a result, the lack of success Devin Booker has as a player, combined with his team’s below-average performance, may have made it difficult for the Book line to appeal to the general audience.

Brand Hierarchy

Before his move to Nike, SGA at Converse was in a unique position as a signature athlete, as he was the creative director of Converse basketball. This role allowed him to go beyond the traditional roles of the signature athletes, becoming a face of the brand with creative control. This would have allowed SGA to have full backing of marketing campaigns of himself and his signature line from Converse, resulting in more impact and reach to the general consumer.

For Devin Booker, he is part of a pool of signature athletes at Nike basketball, which includes the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Ja Morant. Therefore, before the Book line even goes out into the market, it is competing internally with the other Nike signature lines, which are represented by athletes who arguably have had more success compared to Devin Booker. This puts the Book line where it isn’t prioritized and gets as much attention as the Shai line at Converse. And this can be seen in his inconsistent releases and lack of marketing campaigns.

Personal Style

Before his signature shoe, SGA has long been established as one of the NBA’s most fashionable players for his unique taste and off-court fashion. He made the cover of various fashion publications such as Dazed, GQ, VMAN and Pause, establishing himself in the fashion space. This means a lot of attention was on his tunnel fits pre-game, and most of the time, his colourway drops would be teased through his pre-game style, showcasing how the Shai 001s could be styled for off-court fashion. SGA’s connection to fashion gave the Shai 001 additional credibility within the fashion space, therefore allowing it to go beyond performance shoes and reach into the lifestyle space.

For Devin Booker, whilst his fashion sense isn’t bad, he hasn’t had as strong a narrative around him regarding fashion. This has made it more difficult for the Book line to be marketed as a potential lifestyle shoe. And Devin Booker also hasn’t worn the Book line as often off court as Shai has, reducing the potential coverage the shoe could have.

In consistent retail and PE drops

For the Shai 001, all the colourways that he wore on court or off court were eventually released for retail. This allowed Converse to capitalise on the hype for the release, translate it into sales and trigger additional momentum for the signature line to be noticed to the wider audience.

For the Book line, a lot of the colourways that generated hype for the shoes were PEs, which weren’t available. Creating an imbalance between what is available to the average customer versus what is actually shown. The recent example was the Fragment collab, which generated hype for the colourway and genuine excitement. However, the colourway was completely cut off to be a Friends and Family release. This inconsistency in availability of colourways has made any potential momentum of the shoes to be staggered and prevents it from building any excitement for the signature line.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is unfortunate that the biggest factor, the signature player’s on-court performance, has affected the shoe’s hype. Whilst the signature line’s position may be in a different position had Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns been more successful, as briefly analysed, it has shown that the signature line has lacked in other aspects where it could have made up its disadvantages, such as Devin Booker’s personal style and its inconsistent drops.

Whilst season performances cannot be controlled by the brand, the Book line can potentially create its own hype. Leaning into the lifestyle aspects of the Book line, Nike can create a similar programme to the LeBron Watch, which was initiated for the LeBron 13, where colourways were directly inspired by Nike heritage and athletes. For Book 2, considering its skateboard inspiration, it can take colourways of iconic skate shoes, such as the “Yellow Lobster” and “Staple NYC Pigeon”, generating hype and coverage around the shoe. Also, Nike needs to make more exclusive PEs available to the public to a certain degree, whether it’s limited drops at local shops or an online draw. And most importantly, Devin Booker needs to actively push the shoe off court, teasing upcoming releases by styling them into his pre-game fits.

It is also worth noting that from this season, SGA will be a Nike athlete, and his second shoe is set to drop early 2027. With SGA in somewhat of a similar position as Devin Booker, it would be interesting to see if the Shai line will continue the success it has had from its debut.
